MALCOLM BRADLEY
(THE BONNY COMPANY)
Malcolm is the founder and head maker at The Bonny Company, operating from his small self-built workshop based in Dundee. BCo designs and manufactures all of their products from start to finish in-house and specialises in small-batch skateboards, furniture and other interior goods as well as custom commissions. They take pride in producing high-quality Scottish-made products whilst teaching their customers the importance of sustainable wood species.
The skateboards produced by BCo focus on working with local Scottish or Scotland based artists through the production of small batch limited edition releases. This gives the opportunity for the artists to showcase their work on an unfamiliar medium and push their art to new audiences. The skateboard making process involves cold pressing layers of Canadian maple in the Bonny workshop. The boards are then shaped and finished with several techniques from screen printing graphics to using natural wood veneers. The production is on a small scale and all processes are in-house to ensure the highest quality of skateboards.
BCo’s tables and furniture flow on from the design language of the skateboards. The Bonny coffee table is a perfect example of this using a custom pressed top substrate, curved laminated frame and an attractive top wood veneer pattern. The tables combine the clean and modern birch ply aesthetic with more sustainable materials and processing techniques. BCo have created their own substrate material made from layers of cork and ash. The Bonny table tops use 30% less wood compared to a ply alternative and have a more interesting exposed end grain. The traditional veneer patterns for the table tops create a unique marrying of modern design and time old marquetry.
