David grew up around art and craft, living above the gallery that his parents ran in the Scottish Borders for 30 years. This exposure to the creative process gave David an appreciation for handmade objects which led him after school to complete a four-year apprenticeship making harps under the tutorship of luthier Mark Norris. Following his time making musical instruments he then moved his attention to furniture, working at Lanarkshire Hardwoods both as furniture maker and sawmill operator. This was key in giving David a strong understanding of Scottish timber and its qualities for use in furniture production.
Now working from his workshop on Albion Road in Edinburgh, David designs and makes his own range of furniture and accessories under the name Lyne Studio. As well as his production work he also makes bespoke pieces to order. Where possible David likes to work with locally sourced timber, which he feels is not only important from an environmental standpoint but also adds to the story of a piece of furniture. David’s work has a pared-back aesthetic to it, relying on simple forms, joint details and material to create furniture that is minimal while retaining a warmth and tactility to it.
