ANNA LIEBMANN
Nature and history pass through Anna’s hands as she weaves using the willow she grows, cuts, sorts,
and prepares herself. Every year in the early spring, you will find Anna in the willow patch with friends, harvesting the year’s crop, hand weeding and restocking for next year. Anna grows eight types of willow in the patch of different colours, hues and elasticity. Anna makes beautiful baskets incorporating these colourful organic homegrown willows based on traditional baskets of the British Isles. She enjoys the superior functionality of these styles, having been developed for hard use over hundreds of years in conjunction with the human body.
Anna is mainly self-taught and came to basketry through willow growing, inspired by its zero carbon footprint, and the fact that she could create a basket with no fossil fuels bar those involved in producing the secateurs.
Anna aims to contrast the dappled hues of the different willow barks within her work. As she creates baskets and forms incorporating her homegrown willow throughout the year, her affection for the material carries on through the work. The baskets are things of beauty, sturdy and precise.
